Working with ex-prisoners

Ex-prisoners are no more dangerous than any other client group, but often have more complex and entrenched social and health problems, requiring intensive support.

Despite the relatively youthful prison population there is a high level of chronic illness in this group. Poor health along with other high levels of disadvantage can present workers with complex and demanding cases.

Information on this site can help workers become better informed about the need of ex-prisoners and CRC can provide phone support if needed.

CRC provides specialised training to organisations, government departments and community workers engaged in supporting or working with post-release prisoners and families of prisoners.

The individual training workshops are tailored to the needs of workers and organisations and provide practical information about the NSW prison system and how imprisonment affects the families and impacts on the post- release needs of prisoners.

Our training modules include:

Working with post-release offenders
Managing difficult client behaviour
Information about the NSW prison system
Information on pre/post-release issues
Accommodation options

Training is provided by experienced CRC staff from our accommodation, transitional support and families units.

“Crime is the only option you think you have. The thing is, if you get caught, you go to jail where you get three meals and a bed anyway. If you get away with it, it’s just a bonus.”
